TFS then and now – short history of the Society
How TFS started
Transport Friendly Society (TFS) started in 1885 as a members’ club at a bus company in London.
It began by providing peace of mind to drivers who, in exchange for a penny or two per week, knew that if they died while working on the buses, their loved ones would have some money to help them pay for essentials.
Today, TFS has been a Mutual Society for over 130 years and is still providing that peace of mind to bus and coach drivers nationally. In 2019, TFS had nearly 23,000 members and assets worth in excess of £76 million under management.
Find out more about TFS history on our About page.
Our membership is open to anyone associated with passenger transport, their family and friends.
We are now also members of the Association of Financial Mutuals.
